South Union, now owned by a nonprofit educational organization, is one of 24 villages established by the Shakers-a communal religious organization of the 19th century whose religious beliefs set them apart from mainstream America. The museum in the Centre House features original artifacts; double room doors illustrate the Shaker practice of separating the sexes; built-in cabinets and peg strips on the walls emphasize principles of order and cleanliness. There are special events throughout the year.
